The body has been the focus of my professional study and treatment since my earliest days, in 1974, as a clinical psychology intern in rehabilitation medicine at Rusk Institute-NYU Langone Health. Inspired by the challenge of the mindbody problem as manifested in people with intractable chronic back pain, I was able to specialize in treating this common condition under the supervision of the late John E. Sarno, MD and Arlene Feinblatt, PhD. In psychoanalytic training, I affiliated with the Relational theoretical orientation and helped bring the body back into the analytic consulting room, mentored by the late Lewis Aron, PhD and the late Joyce McDougall, EdD. Recognizing that I needed to learn more about treating the impact of emotional trauma, in 2009 I became a student again in the Somatic Experiencing training program developed by Peter Levine, PhD. I continue to study and teach about integrating the latest developments in the neurobiology of attachment, trauma and pain.
